NYC CAN UpDaTe - 80,000 SiGnAtUrEs

as of 9/06/09 Thank you! As a result of your generous support in the last week, NYC CAN has been able to TRIPLE the size of its petitioning staff. For the next two and a half weeks, we will be able to collect 1,000 signatures everyday and skyrockect our total to nearly 60,000.

On Sunday, May 17, 2009, we eclipsed the milestone of 40,000 signatures!

With that number, we are almost guaranteed to have over 30,000 valid signatures -- the magic number that requires City Council to vote on putting the referendum on the ballot. In six weeks, we will have enough that City Council's vote will not matter -- it will go on the ballot automatically. On November 3, 2009, millions of New Yorkers will go to the polls to vote on the formation of a new, independent Commission to finally conduct a real investigation of 9/11.

We urge you now more than ever to dig deep so we can continue this effort past the next two weeks and reach our final goal of 75,000 signatures. We need only 1,200 of you out there to act now and become members of NYC CAN by donating just $25, and we will surpass the $30,000 required to fund the rest of our petitioning effort.

Update: Dear Friends!

On Wednesday, June 24, 2009, we filed the petition with 52,000 signatures!

9/11 Family Members Maureen Hunt and Manny Badillo, and First Responders Charlie Giles of the Feal Good Foundation and Bill Gleason of the World Trade Center Rescuers Foundation, arrived at the City Clerk’s office to deliver the petition and speak in behalf of all the proud and concerned citizens who deserve an unbiased, nonpolitical investigation of the tragedy that has affected us so deeply.

Thank you for getting us this far! City Council now has until August 24 to approve the placement of the referendum on the November 3 ballot. As hundreds more family members, first responders and survivors join our campaign and lobby their council members to support the petition, our chances grow.

In the unlikely event City Council does not approve the placement of the referendum on the ballot, we will be prepared to deliver an additional 30,000 signatures on August 24 to guarantee it gets on the ballot. Already we have 8,000 of the additional 30,000!

NYC CAN is calling upon all its New York City-based supporters to call their representatives NOW. If you don't live in New York City, forward this email to your friends who do. Why? We think City Council is more likely to support the referendum if it is framed as a local issue. We need their constituents to be calling them.
